If England's cricket legends played rugby...

HE'S a cricketing cult hero, but England spin bowler Monty Panesar turned his turban to another sport last weekend when he joined the NSW Waratahs for pre-season rugby training.

Though he admits he was off the pace, Panesar, who has lost his England place to Graeme Swann in recent seasons, enjoyed the experience and got us to thinking which England cricketers would be best suited to the challenges of rugby.

Here's the team we came up with, carrying the bulk of Gatting in the front-row, the height of Tremlett in the line-out and enough South Africans (although not as many as in the current England cricket team) to give them a sporting chance: 15 Mike Atherton; 14 Andrew Flintoff, 13 David Gower, 12 Jonathan Trott, 11 Darren Gough; 10 Alec Stewart, 9 Jack Russell; 1 Robert Key, 2 Mike Gatting, 3 Allan Lamb, 4 Angus Fraser, 5 Chris Tremlett, 6 Kevin Pietersen, 7 Ian Bell, 8 Ian Botham.
