Heineken kick-off delayed for World Cup

The 2011/12 Magners League campaign will proceed as normal despite the staging of the World Cup later this year but the start of the Heineken Cup has been pushed back to accommodate the New Zealand tournament, writes Donnchadh Boyle.

Both the Heineken and Challenge Cups will kick off on the weekend of November 10/11/12/13, less then three weeks after the World Cup final in Auckland on October 23. Once the opening two rounds are completed in November, the tournaments will revert to their customary format, with rounds three and four scheduled for December and rounds five and six taking place in January 2012.

However, the Magners League will take place on six of the eight weekends set aside for the World Cup before a two-week break for the semi-finals and final of the tournament. There will also be four rounds of matches during next year's Six Nations campaign.

The Heineken Cup final is set for Twickenham on the weekend of May 19/20, with the Magners grand final the following weekend.
