CHRISTMAS is on the way and I spent part of this week walking in the air.
As part of my rehabilitation from the back surgery I underwent last month, I have been using an zero-gravity treadmill. I used it a lot for my knee two years ago. It is a machine designed by NASA to help astronauts acclimatise to walking on the moon.
How does that help a sports person?
Well, if you have an injury and you go from doing nothing but rest to running on the pitch with 100pc of your body weight, there is a huge balance in between to try and make up.
You get into the machine, zip yourself up and suction occurs to lift your legs up and you set it from zero to 100pc body-weight and it means that you can slowly reintroduce yourself into running on full body weight. I'll start on 50pc and work up to 100pc and I'll know then I'll be ready for the field. It is always a bit of a gamble to come back, so this limits that risk.
It feels exactly like what you'd imagine running on the moon to be. The benefits are enormous.
