IF -- and it's a big 'if', I know -- the English and French were to accept the Pro12 proposal for a 32-team premier European event as opposed to their preference for a 20-club competition, then a light could appear at the end of a depressingly dark tunnel beyond 2014.
The 'guaranteed qualification' issue will still have to be addressed, a major hurdle to be overcome, and one hardly helped by the dismal performances of the Italians, Scots and, to a slightly lesser extent, the Welsh, in the recently completed opening rounds.
