Teddy McCarthy got his first victory as Laois manager at Dr Cullen Park last night, but he had Willie Hyland to thank for the win.
Hyland hit 0-13 in total for Laois, who recovered well from their relegation from NHL Division 1B last month.
Any chance of victory for Kevin Ryan's troops ended when goalkeeper Frank Foley saw his penalty saved in the 47th minute.
The Carlow heads didn't quite drop at that stage, but four points in the following four minutes from McCarthy's side ensured that it is Laois who go on to meet Dublin in the provincial quarter-final.
Both sides finished the match with 14 men as midfielders Jack Kavanagh for Carlow and James Walsh of Laois picked up second yellow cards in the second half for an off-the-ball clash.
Carlow, who trailed 0-12 to 0-7 at the break, were thrown a lifeline 11 minutes into the second period when Gearoid Burke hauled down Carlow full-forward Mark Brennan inside the area. Alan Kelly awarded the penalty, but after making the long trek up the field to take the penalty, Foley left empty-handed as Reilly expertly blocked his shot.
