Downey 'will enhance reds'

Friday February 03 2012

MUNSTER coach Tony McGahan believes the capture of James Downey (30) from Northampton "can only enhance" the squad, WRITES HUGH FARRELLY.

The powerful centre has signed on a two-year deal to return to the province, having played under Declan Kidney in 2006-07, following stints with Connacht and his native Leinster.

Downey became a regular in the No 12 jersey after joining Northampton in 2007 and has made 135 appearances for the club, scoring 12 tries and playing a key role in the Saints' march to the Heineken Cup final last year.

"James has been on our radar for some time," said McGahan. "His style and his attitude can only enhance our squad."

Downey's arrival could signal the exit for Lifeimi Mafi, who has been linked with a move to French Top 14 club Perpignan.
