The Eagles suffered their third successive away defeat and will probably finish bottom of the group. Their final game is at home to Llanelli on Saturday.

Connacht's only points were scored on 14 minutes by out-half Tadhg Leader via a penalty -- but by half-time Rotherham had run in six tries.

The Eagles improved for half an hour in the second half before conceding three tries in the last 10 minutes.

"In this season's competition, we've had a hard time on the road and this is something we need to have a look at," explained coach Nigel Carolan.

"But flanker Rory Moloney, second-row Sean O'Brien and No 8 Eoghan Masterson were effective and put their bodies on the line against a side which punished our mistakes."
