Elwood hit by back-row crisis

Connacht coach Eric Elwood has launched a widespread search for temporary cover for his back row, with new No 8 Ezra Taylor set to be ruled out for four to six weeks.

Connacht face a back-row crisis, with skipper John Muldoon and former Irish flanker Johnny O'Connor out until next month, while the versatile Andrew Browne is also doubtful.

Elwood said he is awaiting the outcome of a scan on Taylor's knee ligament injury, picked up in the 40-17 win over the Newport Gwent Dragons on Saturday.

"It's not looking good for Ezra. We are waiting for the results of the scan but, even being optimistic, it looks like he will be out for at least four to six weeks," said Elwood yesterday evening.

"Last week we had a front-row crisis and this week the problem is in the back row."

Centre Niva Ta'auso is also doubtful for Saturday's trip to Llanelli Scarlets after picking up a hamstring injury in training.

"The medics will keep an eye on him and we may only make a decision on him after we travel to Llanelli," said Elwood.
