'Eerie silence' - Appalling attendance for first PRO14 game on South African soil
The Southern Kings and Cheetahs have endured a baptism of fire in the Guinness PRO14 and the new tournament doesn't seem to have captured the imagination of fans in South Africa.
Leinster and the Kings faced off today at the Nelson Mandella Bay Stadium and very few spectators have turned out to see them lock horns.
Leinster emerge to polite applause followed by eerie silence. Less than 500 here, it's weird pic.twitter.com/fNmWK6ziRK— Rúaidhrí O'Connor (@RuaidhriOC) September 16, 2017
There has been little or no atmosphere at the game which kicked off at 1.15pm Irish time.
The official attendance was given as 3,011 much to bemusement of those in attendance.
The official attendance is, wait for it........ 3,011— Rúaidhrí O'Connor (@RuaidhriOC) September 16, 2017
A few weeks in and this project is a monster fail i think most would agree....— B_J_G (@izita_monstar) September 16, 2017
Thus ends one of the most underwhelming and insipid sporting events I've ever attended pic.twitter.com/kbcElmy7iM— Rúaidhrí O'Connor (@RuaidhriOC) September 16, 2017
The Cheetahs play host to Italian side Zebre later and are not charging for tickets. Hopefully the ploy generates a crowd.
Neither of the South African sides were able to register a point in the first two rounds of the tournament.
