Ulster seal €200,000 deal for Kiwi Rush

Hugh Farrelly

FOLLOWING on from the capture of South African second row Johann Muller, Ulster are believed to have captured All Blacks No 8 Xavier Rush on a two-year deal believed to be worth more than €200,000.

The 32-year-old has been a key figure for Cardiff Blues over the past five seasons and his departure is a major blow to their coach Dai Young. "We want to compete at the highest level but there does come a point where you just cannot afford people," said Young.

While Rush will bring proven quality to the Ulster back-row, the news is less welcome for Declan Kidney as his presence will limit opportunities for Irish-qualified back-rows such as Chris Henry, who recently signed a new contract with the province.
