Glenstal dig deep to stun Cup holders Crescent Comp
Glenstal Abbey 6 Crescent Comp 3
Glenstal caused a massive upset when they squeezed past three-in-a-row-chasing Crescent Comprehensive at Thomond Park to set up a semi-final clash with Rockwell.
Glenstal took an early grip on proceedings and never relaxed.
They might have won by a more comfortable margin but in the first half they missed two penalty chances and also had a try disallowed.
The game was only nine minutes old when Crescent were penalised for not releasing and Jack Stafford slotted the penalty, which proved to be the only score of the first half.
When Dylan Sheehan dropped a goal for Crescent six minutes into the second half it seemed that the champions of the past two years would capitalise, but they were on terms for only six minutes as Stafford kicked his second penalty.
Both sides created chances but the Tom Tierney-coached Glenstal kept their nerve. Full-back Colm Hogan, centre Tim Costigan and fly-half Stafford shone behind the scrum and in the pack Alex Donohue, Ben Clancy and Neilus Mulvihill impressed.
For Crescent Jack Lyons, Billy O’Hora, Peter Hickey and Caolan Moloney never ceased trying.
