WALES lock Ian Evans scored the only try of a memorable west Wales derby at Parc y Scarlets as the Ospreys rose to second in the Pro12 table by beating Scarlets 10-6.

Scarlets had been leading through two Rhys Priestland penalties until Dan Biggar pulled back three points, and then Evans went over from a line-out drive on 73 minutes.

The home side went through 21 phases in the final two minutes looking for the winning try but Ospreys' defence held firm.

In the other Welsh derby, Jason Tovey delivered a faultless kicking display to help Newport Gwent Dragons beat Cardiff Blues 22-16 in a thriller.

Tovey landed six out of six kicks with five penalties and the conversion of Toby Faletau's first-half try.

The Blues were their own worst enemies at times as a series of second-half errors stopped them adding to hooker Kristian Dacey's try. Leigh Halfpenny kicked the rest of their points.

Glasgow ended a run of bad results and halted Edinburgh's resurgence when they saw off their oldest rivals 20-16 in the first leg of their festive double-header in front of a 10,125 crowd at Murrayfield.

Dougie Fife scored Edinburgh's only try and skipper Greig Laidlaw kicked the other points for the home side, while Stuart Hogg bagged a touchdown for Glasgow and Duncan Weir contributed the rest with his boot.

The match rarely sparked into life -- a situation that was not helped by the appalling state of the playing surface, which again cut up badly.
