Cork Con storm back to deny Clontarf

AIL round-up

CLONTARF, last season's Division 1A runners-up, had every reason to feel frustrated following their 22-20 defeat by Cork Constitution at Temple Hill.

The visitors seemed to have the match in the bag when leading 17-3 early in the second half, thanks to tries from Cathal O'Flynn and Dermot O'Meara, but Cork Con somehow managed to dig out a dramatic victory with a try from full-back Darragh Lyons, converted by Jerry Hurley, seven minutes into injury-time.

Cork Con had got themselves back into contention with tries from James Ryan and a superb effort from Hurley after a move which started near their own line.

In Division 1B, UCD ran in seven tries as they trounced Belfast Harlequins 48-20, while Dublin University got four as they accounted for Blackrock 29-11.

James Buckley crossed for a hat-trick as Corinthians opened their Division 2A campaign with a 33-15 win over DLSP, while promoted Cashel beat Midleton 21-11.

New boys Skerries began life in senior rugby with a 22-20 defeat at Instonians, while Naas edged out NUIM Barnhall 21-19 in the Kildare derby.
