You need 50 quality players to compete
Looking around the league, it's crazy the amount of injuries that are happening on a weekly basis.
People might think it's just Connacht, but Ulster were depleted when they came to the Sportsground and they supposedly have a huge squad.
In the past a team could have got away with maybe 30 or 35 players in the one season, but now you need about 50 quality players if you want to compete.
Connacht had a small squad last season, and they almost couldn't field a team when they went to Newcastle Falcons in the Challenge Cup.
The good thing with Connacht is they have such a good academy, and they have players who are always ready to make the step up.
You need to take your chance when you're given it; players aren't simply thrown in anymore with a hope they will perform. They have the best possible chance to play well with their integration into the squad. The onus is on the individual to know his roles.
They go into these games with a positive mindset. They have a clear idea of what's needed from them and then they go out and perform.
Maybe that's where Connacht made those extra gains last season, and now they are definitely reaping the rewards.
