Winnett's double leads Marist to promised land
Marist 25 Garbally 0 Top Oil Schools Jnr Cup final
Marist College kicked off the Junior Cup at the Sportsground on Wednesday and they enjoyed the majority of possession in the opening exchanges with scrum half Tom O'Carroll kicking a long range penalty to take the lead after three minutes.
Garbally's stout defence was no match for the Marist attacking line and centre Mattie Nally sliced through to score under the posts. O'Carroll converted to make it 10-0.
Garbally enjoyed a period of dominance after a big hit from full-back Cian Treacy forced a knock-on which was cleared downfield by centre Shane Jennings but winger Nathan Horan was just wide of the posts from the resulting penalty.
Marist's big No 8 Liam Winnett and lock Mark Tallon made some excellent carries but Garbally put in some solid tackles to bring the big men down and they kept the half-time score 10-0.
Garbally started the second half the brighter with incisive breaks from Jennings and winger Nathan Horan but they were unable to convert their dominance into points.
Marist had chances of their own, with captain Mathias O'Neill penalised for a double movement when it looked like he had crossed for the second try.
It wasn't long until the brute strength of prop Cathal O'Grady and tenacity of O'Neill put Marist deep into the Garbally 22 and there was no stopping Winnett as he barrelled over from close range.
Mattie Nally scored an excellent try on the right wing skinning the Garbally defence on the outside to give the Athlone school a 20-point cushion and Winnett added his second try with the virtually last play of the game.
