Karl has recently joined Connacht Rugby after more than five years as CEO of Mountaineering Ireland. Previously, he had a career in the Defence Forces that included service overseas in Bosnia and Liberia.
Karl is originally from Claremorris in Co Mayo.
When did you join Connacht?
I started working with Connacht Rugby in March of this year. What do you do? As Head of Operations my job is to ensure that all the facilities and systems are in place to support the entire team within Connacht Rugby - players and staff.
I am also responsible for the Sportsground, risk management and the planning and delivery of match days.
What's a typical day like?
The day usually starts with a quick check with the ground staff. After that it can be anything from scheduled meetings, chasing suppliers, dealing with stakeholders and making sure that everything is in place for the next game, be it the provincial club U-13 final or the next Pro12 game.
What is the best part of your job?
Working with people, staff and volunteers, who are passionate about what they do and committed to the Connacht way.
There's an expectation that no matter what role you have within Connacht Rugby everyone will deliver their best, and it is great to be a part of it!
Most memorable match?
Treviso at home this season: 53-5. That week, I had been offered the Head of Operations post and to see the team smash Treviso, scoring seven tries, focused my mind on the expectation that now exists within the province.
