Muldoon's new deal a big boost to club
It is great news for Connacht to see John Muldoon signed up for another year, writes Johnny O'Connor.
With Pat Lam leaving at the end of the season, it is particularly important that there is some continuity in the club, and retaining 'Mul' for another season will help in that area.
On the field he is the real leader of this team. He organises his side defensively and he also plays a key role in attack. It's brilliant news that he's staying on.
Coming in the week that John Cooney's departure was announced, it is a boost too. It's sad to see Cooney departing for Ulster - he was instrumental in last season's run to Pro12 title.
He filled in brilliantly as a place-kicker when he was needed this season as well, and last weekend he showed his versatility once more, when he wore the No 10 jersey in the hammering of Zebre.
Any player of substance wants to play every weekend, and if a man sees the opportunity somewhere else, which Cooney does, then you certainly cannot blame him for leaving.
And let's not forget Connacht have a decent supply of scrum-halves coming in behind Kieran Marmion. The academy has produced some fine talent with Caolin Blade, Conor McKeon and Stephen Kerins all eager to play more.
