Muldoon honoured by Portumna visit
John Muldoon said he was deeply honoured and embarrassed with the reception laid on for him and his Connacht team-mates at his former school, Portumna CS.
Muldoon was the guest of honour last week when Pat Lam brought his squad to Portumna, the first time in 14 years that Connacht have been back at the school for a training session.
Indeed, it is also Muldoon's 14th season with Connacht and he admits he was delighted to be able to parade the Pro12 trophy in front of his old friends and teachers, and to introduce the squad to the current Portumna CS students.
A special presentation was made to Muldoon on his return to his alma mater and he hopes the visit can inspire a future Connacht star to make the next step.
"There were some very nice words said inside, some of it was very embarrassing for me but I'm very humbled to be here and I'm delighted to come back to where it all began," said Muldoon.
"It was great to be back in the school. This is where I started playing rugby at 14 years of age. Walking through the doors after such a long time, the memories started flooding back.
"It's 14 years since we visited here as a team and little did I think that 14 years later I'd be back here as a Pro12 winner.
"Hopefully there will be one or two young future stars sitting in the crowd looking to play in the future.
"These visits are huge. We've been all over the province in the last few years and when you see those faces in the Sportsground shouting you on you know it makes a difference."
