Back-row Eoghan Masterson says he is raring to fight his way back into Pat Lam's starting pack for the run in to the Pro12 season.

With just six games remaining, Connacht need a powerful finish to their campaign to seal a top-six finish and the guarantee of Champions Cup rugby that comes with it. But with their biggest rivals for sixth place, Glasgow Warriors, up next, there is much to fight for still.

There is seven points between the sides, but Connacht have a game in hand on the Scottish side, and a win in Scotstoun would set up a pulsating last five games for the champions.

And Masterson says he is desperate to play his part after he made his return from a year on the sidelines against Zebre last weekend.

"It's great to have all that competition, everyone is pushing each other and it's really driving the standards at training and I think that's translating out on to the pitch as well," said Masterson.

"I'm looking forward to getting some more minutes under the belt hopefully and getting back out training.

"We knew we needed to get four wins out of the last four and we did that. We have a break now and a couple of big games coming up.

Step up

"We have Glasgow after the rest week so that'll be another step up, but we're looking forward to it."

Masterson picked up the serious knee injury away to Zebre last March, but he was delighted that all the hard work and recuperation was worth it.

"I was happy to play any game," he said. "My first game back was with the Eagles and I have played a couple of AIL games as well which has been great. I was absolutely delighted to get back out there with the senior lads in a good win."
