The Connacht Junior rugby season kicks off in earnest this weekend and in a change from recent years it is cup competitions which will take centre stage on the opening weekend.

Games will be played across the province in both the Cawley Cup and the Curley Cup.

Defending champions Ballinasloe will begin the defence of the trophy they lifted last season with a trip to face Ballina.

Beaten finalists Westport will get their campaign underway at home to Division 1A rivals Connemara.

The Curley Cup also returns on the first weekend of September with two games taking place in the preliminary round of the competition.

Dunmore will face Creggs under lights tomorrow night in Roscommon, while Tuam entertain Galwegians this evening.

Last season's beat finalists Corrib along with Buccaneers, Ballinrobe, Claremorris, Ballyhaunis and NUIG, all received byes in the opening round.
