Cian Healy a World Cup doubt for Ireland following neck surgery
Cian Healy is in a race to be fit for Ireland's World Cup campaign after he underwent surgery on his neck.
A dismal night for Leinster, who beat Treviso 10-0 in a drab affair in the Pro12, was made even worse afterwards when O’Connor revealed that Healy underwent neck surgery yesterday.
“He had a disc repaired this evening and he is recovering well, the surgeon is very happy how it went,” he said.
“There isn’t a time scale but they are pretty optimistic, but they’ll wait and see how he pulls up post-surgery.
“It (World Cup) shouldn’t be an issue but we just have to see how he progresses post -surgery.”
Joe Schmidt will be keeping a close eye on Healy's recuperation after he spent long periods of the last two seasons on the sidelines.
Luke Fitzgerald underwent shoulder surgery last week and O'Connor yesterday revealed that the surgery was fast-tracked to give him the best possible chance to be fit and ready for World Cup preparations.
“It’s an old injury that he’s been managing through,” said O’Connor of Fitzgerald. “The medical decision was to get it repaired as quick as possible for what’s around the corner obviously.”
