Laws and punishments

Depending on the citing commissioner's report, O'Connell could be sanctioned with one of two offences.

Referee Christophe Berdos charged that an elbow was used, although Munster may argue that it was an arm. Maximum suspensions are rarely handed out in such circumstances.

Law 10.4(a): Striking another player with a hand, arm or fist.

Entry point based on scale of seriousness of the player's conduct, which constitutes the offending.

Lower End (LE): 2 weeks

Mid Range (MR): 5 weeks

Top End (TE): 8+ weeks

Maximum sanction: 12 months
