Cardiff cup bid

The Welsh Rugby Union has announced it will bid for Cardiff to stage next year's Heineken Cup and Amlin Challenge Cup finals after the French Rugby Federation (FFR) withdrew its application.

The FFR made the decision due to uncertainty over the Stade de France's availability, although it had yet to officially name the venue that would stage the event. European Rugby Cup (ERC) subsequently announced it was looking for other cities to tender for the event with a decision to be made by the end of the month amid suggestions the IRFU may look to repeat the success of this year's finals weekend in Dublin.

But a formal approach has been made by the WRU group chief executive Roger Lewis to confirm the offer which, if successful, would see Wales host the Heineken Cup final for the seventh time.
