Brian O'Driscoll to lead Ireland in New Zealand tour
TWO of Leinster’s Heineken Cup winners received honours on Monday when Rob Kearney was named as the ERC European player of the year and Brian O’Driscoll was reinstated as Ireland’s captain for their tour of New Zealand next month.
Full-back Kearney scored six tries from nine starts in Leinster’s unbeaten Heineken Cup campaign and delivered another impressive display in the 42-14 victory over Ulster at Twickenham on Saturday.
O’Driscoll, who missed most of the season with a shoulder/neck injury, also excelled in the final and was one of 11 Leinster players named in Declan Kidney’s 29-man Ireland squad to face the world champions in three Tests.
Kidney has named three uncapped players – Ulster prop Declan Fitzpatrick and Munster duo, hooker Mike Sherry and wing Simon Zebo — while four places are yet to be filled as he waits for fitness updates on several players, including Paul O’Connell, who has a knee problem.
