Ireland legend Brian O'Driscoll has got himself into a Twitter row with Australian winger Adam Ashley-Cooper after claiming the Wallaby's move to France was motivated by money.
Speaking on Off The Ball on Newstalk on Saturday, BOD claimed the 31-year-old's move to Bordeaux Beglés on a two-year deal was done solely for financial gain.
He made the claim while discussing the future of Ian Madigan, who according to reports is in 'advanced talks' with the Top 14 side.
"You have to weigh up everything and money is going to become a really big factor in all this," O'Driscoll said. "Adam Ashley-Cooper didn't go to Bordeaux to win Top 14 titles, he went for a bit of sunshine and a bit of money."
Ashley-Cooper, who has 37 international tries to his name, took exception to O'Driscoll's opinion and posted a response on Twitter and a lively debate ensued.
O'Driscoll admitted there was a mistake in the transcript, however he didn't deny the comments and stood by his assertions. The pair continued to snipe at each other before Matt Giteau and Jonny Wilkinson stepped in to lighten the mood.
@AdamCoopy that quote is incorrect. It should have said 'pension' instead of 'a bit of money'... And there's no shame in that!— Brian O'Driscoll (@BrianODriscoll) December 20, 2015
@BrianODriscoll haha well i guess there's no shame in playing your last 2 seasons hanging on for cash then either?— Adam Ashley-Cooper (@AdamCoopy) December 20, 2015
@BrianODriscoll Thanks for your rugby CV mate and well done on those achievements— Adam Ashley-Cooper (@AdamCoopy) December 20, 2015
BOD had a great response for Ashley-Cooper's brother Matt who jumped in to defend his brother
Here's hoping my sis gets on here quick to defend me! https://t.co/ZXp3m6BBb1— Brian O'Driscoll (@BrianODriscoll) December 21, 2015
@dk3lly wasn't difficult at all. Stand by the lot. Always going to be those that disagree. Not a popularity contest.— Brian O'Driscoll (@BrianODriscoll) December 21, 2015
Toulon star Matt Giteau intervened to bring some humour to the situation
