The Olympic Council of Ireland has announced it will carry out its own internal investigation into the ticket touting controversy.

It is understood the investigation committee will be comprised of First Vice-President William O'Brien, Secretary General Dermot Henihan and lawyer Barry MacCarthy. An OCI spokesman told the Irish Independent they were picked "because of their experience, expertise, and their capacity to start investigations immediately, with O'Brien and Henihan being on the ground in Rio."

Mr MacCarthy founded Dublin legal firm MacCarthy & Company in 2010, having previously been a partner in a large firm.

First Vice-President William O'Brien was the Deputy Chef de Mission for the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

Secretary General Dermot Henihan is renowned in the sport of rowing. He held the position of Deputy Chef de Mission in 2004 and Chef de Mission for the Beijing games in 2008.
