Four years after agonisingly being pipped to a podium position, a fine regatta saw the 26-year-old arrive in the medal race in third spot.

It was a position she improved on as London 2012 tears were replaced by joy in Brazil, finishing fifth in the rescheduled medal race to win silver in front of Sugarloaf Mountain.

There was joyous reaction to Murphy's amazing display on social media and fellow Olympic silver medallists Kenny Egan and Sonia O'Sullivan were among the first to pass on their congratulations.
