Revealed! When Irish athletes are in action at the Rio Olympics this weekend

The largest sporting event of 2016 will officially begin in the early hours of this morning when the Olympic torch reaches the Maracana stadium.

Certain events have already begun due to scheduling but the first of the 77 athletes representing Ireland will enter their respective arenas tomorrow.

The first to don the green of Ireland will be cyclists Dan Martin and Nicolas Roche in the men's road race.

Here is the schedule for Irish athletes competing this weekend:

SATURDAY, AUGUST 6

CYCLING

Men's road racing (Dan Martin and Nicolas Roche), 1.30pm

GYMNASTICS

Individual Competition Kieran Behan, 2.30

HOCKEY

India v Ireland, 3.0pm;

ROWING

Women's Individual single sculls – Sanita Purpure, 1.50pm

SWIMMING

Men's 100m breaststroke - Nicolas Quinn, 19.07

SUNDAY, AUGUST 7

BOXING

Preliminary rounds Welterweight 69kg: Steven Donnelly, 3.45pm Lightweight 60kg: David Oliver Joyce, 9.0pm

EQUESTRIAN

Three Day Eventing Team and Individual Competition: Dressage: Clare Abbott, Jony Evans, Mark Kyle, Padraig McCarthy 2.0pm

GYMNASTICS

Qualification women’s individual all-round: Ellis O’Reilly 1.45pm

HOCKEY

Netherlands v Ireland 10.0pm

ROWING

Repechage women’s single sculls: Sanita Puspure possible 1.0pm;

Round 1 women’s lightweight double sculls: Sinead Lynch and Claire Lambe 2.40pm;

Round 1 men’s lightweight double sculls: Paulí and Gary O’Donovan 3.20pm

SWIMMING

Heats Women’s 100m breaststroke: Fiona Doyle 6.11pm; Heats Men’s 100m backstroke: Shane Ryan 6.22pm
