Michael Conlan has served up a suitably inflammatory tweet directed at Russian President Vladimir Putin following his controversial defeat in the Olympics in Rio.

Conlan appeared to outclass his Russia opponent Vladimir Nikitin in their bantamweight clash, with his angry reaction in his post fight RTE interview summing up his mood of anger.

With the Belfast-born fighter now certain to walk away from the amateur ranks after he accused the sport of being “corrupt from top to bottom”, he has added fuel to that fire by suggesting Russian leader Putin may have had a hand in paying off the judges that handed victory to Nikitin.

Conlan’s Ireland boxing team-mate Paddy Barnes served up similar sentiments as he watched the drama unfold in the Rio ring, with his reaction captured by RTE confirming he suspected the judges had been bought off to award the fight to the fortunate Russian.
