Her opening day on Monday saw her initially scored fourth overall after two races but improved to third-place when Lijia Xu, the London 2012 Gold medallist, was disqualified from a race.

Murphy placed fourth in the opening race yesterday followed by a seventh, both considered consistently good results in her 37-boat class.

However, her Chinese rival recovered from the disqualification by discarding the result, and a third place and a win propelled her into the overall lead of the class.

Meanwhile, Finn Lynch had a mixed day with an impressive 15th place and a discarded 40th place in the men's single-handed event, where he is the youngest competitor in the 46-strong field.

The Carlow 20-year-old is 24th overall.
