IRISH-American swimmer Shane Ryan has failed to match his exploits in the 100m backstroke in the heats of the freestyle 100m in the Aquatic Stadium in Rio.

Ryan, who contested the semi-final of the backstroke event, finished second in heat 3 of the 100m freestyle in 49.82, his fastest time this year.

But it was only good enough to give him 40th place overall based on times. The sixteen fastest swimmers qualified for the semi-final so Ryan was eliminated.
