Sanita Puspure's medal hopes perished in the womens' single sculls quarter finals today with a fourth place finish to repeat her London frustration.

The Latvian-born competitor came with a storming surge over the closing 200 metres but just came up short of catching Belarussian veteran, Ekaterina Karsten, for the coveted third place.

It was a hugely frustrating outcome for Puspure who many believed had real medal potential after her European Championship bronze earlier this year.

She trailed Karsten by three seconds with 500m to go and her chances looked very remote but she stormed home and missed out on a top three finish by just 0.65 of a second.

Puspure will now aim for a place in the B final.
