John, the husband of renowned trainer Jessica, passed away at his Co Kildare home yesterday.

Jockey Barry Geraghty just recently guided Jezki- a Harrington trained horse- to victory in Cheltenham.

The top jockey paid tribute to 78-year-old Harrington, and said he “definitely” had a huge influence on his career.

“Johnny was such a nice man, on and off the race course.  He was a lovely person and great fun,” he told the Irish Independent.

Mr Harrington had four children and passed away after a battle with cancer.

He spent much of his lengthy career working as a bloodstock agent. However, Geraghty heralded him as the “unsung hero of a lot of great horses”.

“He was a very knowledgeable man. You couldn't get better company, it's very sad,” he added.

John was spent a number of years training horses, before his wife Jessica took the reigns in 1987.

He will be buried on Monday afternoon, following funeral mass in Moone, Co. Kildare.

The death has also taken place of 98-year-old former trainer and breeder Marguerite Weld.

Her only son Dermot is a renowned Curragh based flat trainer.

She died after a short illness in the Beacon Clinic yesterday.

She will be buried after a funeral mass in Two Mile House, Co Kildare on Monday afternoon.
