Priest claims to have lifted the 62-year "curse" on the Mayo Team

Hopes of Mayo supporters heightened as a priest claims to have lifted the "curse" on the team.

A Foxford priest has officially blessed the Mayo senior footballers in an attempt to counteract a "curse" on the team.

It is rumoured that the team were "cursed" following their last All-Ireland win and it prevents the team from taking the Sam Maguire home as long as any members of the 1951 team remain living.

Many different versions of the legend exist, but Fr. Costello has blessed the team in Foxford where the original "curse" is understood to have been cast.

Fr Costello stressed that there is "nothing" in the parish records which could confirm the legend.

Mayo have lost 7 All-Ireland finals in the last 63 years. Exitement for this year's All-Ireland is building, with the "Mayo for Sam" campaign going global and tickets being sold on eBay for over €2,000.
