The first Irish player to qualify for Wimbledon in decades put in a titanic effort today against a classy French opponent.
Conor Niland - Ireland's top tennis player - was taking-on world number 53, Adrian Mannarino in the first-round at the All-England Club.
Niland won the opening set by six games to four as he left his opponent shell-shocked. Mannarino, however, rediscovered his composure and took the second and – in a gripping tie-break – the third set.
The Limerick man spurned a glorious opportunity to take the third set, after leading by a point during the tie-break.
In the fourth Niland took the lead with an early break of serve.
