Versatile Dub Fagan lands spot on Dunne undercard
Nobody could accuse Oisin Fagan of ducking challenges. The Dubliner, who moves from superfeatherweight to lightweight and even lightwelter with apparent ease, will box anybody, anywhere.
After his thrilling 12-round loss to fellow Dubliner Eddie Hyland in July, he has been booked for the undercard of the Bernard Dunne-Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym world super-bantamweight title fight at the 02 in Dublin on Saturday week.
Fagan (35) emigrated to Oklahoma City in 1998 on a soccer scholarship, only for a knee injury to end his career. He turned to amateur boxing to keep fit, but, with money running out, he called into Buck Smith's famous gym and asked could he get some pro fights. Buck obliged, and in February 2003 Fagan began a career in the punch-for-pay game.
Unbeaten light-heavyweights Jamie Power and Michael 'The Storm' Sweeney are promising fireworks in an eight-rounder on the Dunne card. Power has won all his six bouts to date, while Sweeney, originally from Mayo and now based in Galway, has seven wins and a draw.
Two Irishmen are included in the latest Prizefighter heavyweight competition at the ExCel Arena in London on October 2 -- Galway's Coleman Barrett, winner of all his eight fights and a cousin of former Olympian Francis Barrett, and Belfast's Scott Belshaw, who has 10 wins and two losses.
On October 10, John Duddy fights Mexican middleweight Jorge Michael Munoz at Madison Square Garden.
