Tyrur McGuigan looks in great shape to advance Derby claims

DEADLY DUO

Tonight's racing schedule has been largely overshadowed by the closing of entries for the Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby, with the number of contenders going past the advertised 144.

This guarantees that there will be three nights of Derby action in the first round next week between Thursday and Saturday nights.

The draw will be made at 10.0 on Tuesday morning at Shelbourne and all greyhound enthusiasts are welcome. The main talking point will surely be the massive entry of 20 dogs from leading owner PJ Fahy.

This is undoubtedly the largest entry ever from an individual owner for any greyhound Classic, certainly in this part of the world. What's more, at least half a dozen of them have very decent chances of contesting the final stages of the Classic.

One of those Fahy entries can advance his Derby claims at Shelbourne this evening when Tyrur McGuigan contests the sixth race, an A1 event. This fellow has the class to summarily dismiss such opposition and his running last week suggested that he is very much back to something like his top form.

Other Derby entries that can earn the entry money this evening include the Paul Hennessy-trained pair, Barefoot Admiral and Tranquil Time.

The former fell out of traps last week and can gain revenge on his conqueror Dalcash Cardosa in the eighth race.

Tranquil Time was a quarter-finalist at Wimbledon but has since been on the injured list. Stand by for a forward role in the ninth contest.

Other likely winners include Graham Holland's Cabra Legend in an open 550 and Owen McKenna's Ocean Crash in a similar event.

Big race of the weekend is the final of the Tipperary Cup at Thurles tomorrow evening, where there will be a 7.30 start.

Graham Holland has a very strong position with Carib King and Leeview Jet and they will go to traps the two favourites to land the €11,000 prize.

Leeview Jet will need to produce something like his very best start to clear the bend and it may be a safer bet to look towards Carib King with the perfect inside draw.

However, this is going to be a hotly contested affair and all six runners have decent prospects.
