Twirl facing stiff test in high-class Irish Oaks

DOG CHAT

History will be made next Saturday when there will be live TV coverage of two major Irish competitions at two different venues.

Both the Northern Irish Derby final at Drumbo Park and the Irish Oaks at Shelbourne will be featured in a live programme running on Sky Sports 4 from 7.30 to 10.0.

The first staging of the Northern Irish Derby has been a great success, with large rounds and record-breaking performances.

It also boasts a very hot favourite in Leeview Jet, which is the holder of both the 525 and 550-yard records and is unbeaten in seven starts around the northern track. He looks to be well drawn on the inside rail in the final and Graham Holland's dog can prove too strong for Cian Abbey and Loughview Gem.

The Sporting Press Irish Oaks final boasts a strong line-up of bitches. The bookmakers are finding it difficult to decide between Mozzletoff and Droopys Twirl, and these exceptional trackers will have their work cut out against Maggies Whistle, Cool It Baby, Mutual Decision and Jimney Cricket.

brilliant

Mozzletoff and Droopys Twirl have produced a succession of brilliant runs, with Twirl's 28.22 run in the semi the joint fastest time recorded by a bitch at Shelbourne. Question is, can she break as fast this week surrounded in the boxes by Mutual Decision and Cool It Baby?

The Kerry Agribusiness Irish St Leger at Limerick is now down to the last 12 and the big three are firmly established as What A Tornado, Judicial Academy and Paradise Casino, and they have been drawn together in the opening heat. There is certainly no room for error and Shelbourne Geoff will be a threat to them all.

The second semi will be regarded as a soft touch, with Big Appetite the one to take the beating. Allowdale Prince and Killians Express can also be involved.

The stayers' Classic, the Gain Feeds Corn Cuchulainn at Harold's Cross, closes to entries today and it looks as though it will be a 36-dog event.

There is a high-class entry with the likes of Helmet Boy, Olympic Stunner, Kerryroad Baba, Express Trend and Fleeting Image major fancies.
