A record entry of over 6,000 and a quality field up front in the men's and women's events, should make for a day of great racing in the Phoenix Park on Saturday, when the National Lottery Irish Runner 5 Mile Road Race takes place -- starting at 10.0.
Included in the men's field are Sergiu Ciobanu of Clonliffe Harriers, Alan McCormack (DSD), and Greg Roberts (City of Derry Spartans) who will be racing for the Eddie Hogan/Eddie Spillane Trophy.
Lizzie Lee of Leevale AC, winner of the State Street Docklands race, will start as favourite in the women's race but she will face stiff opposition from Aoife Talty (Raheny Shamrock AC), Gladys Ganiel O'Neill (Belfast), Breege Connolly (North Belfast) and Annette Kealy, (Raheny Shamrocks AC). The winner of this event will receive the Jim Dowling Memorial Trophy in memory of the great journalist who helped pioneer the coverage of women's athletics in Ireland.
There will be a shuttle bus service from Parkgate Street to bring runners to the start areas which will function between 8.30 and 9.30 on Saturday morning.
Full results and coverage of the National Lottery Irish Runner 5 Mile Race will be published in next Monday's Irish Independent.
Any entrants for the other two races in the series -- the Frank Duffy 10 Mile and the National Lottery Half Marathon -- are strongly urged to enter online as soon as possible on www.dublinmarathon.ie.
