Things got nasty on the opening day of the Australian Open as No.4 seed Stanislas Wawrinka smashed a ball at his first round opponent Martin Klizan - with the impact point making for uncomfortable viewing.

Wawrinka was in the midst of a five-set epic against Klizan when the incident occurred, with the boos from the crowd confirming the Swiss star may have overstepped the mark as he unleashed a stinging forehand.

Klizan had given up on the point as Wawrinka moved in to apply the finishing touch, with the ferocity of the shot that sent the ball into his rival’s groin area inspiring an instant apology from the US Open champion.

Wawrinka was a break down in the final set, but he managed to turn to the match around to secure a 4-6 6-4 7-5 4-6 6-4 win.
