Defending champion Simon Carr motored on from a tight opening set to clinch a place in the final of the MSL Motor Group National Indoor Championships at Westwood in Leopardstown yesterday.

A son of former Dublin player and manager Tommy Carr, the 16-year-old Mullingar native was pushed to a tie-break by No 4 seed Morgan Lohan (17) from the St Anne's Club in Waterford.

Carr, who prepared for the event by playing in a world-ranking adult tournament in Turkey earlier this month, duly upped his game considerably before prevailing on a 7-6, 6-2 scoreline.

In today's decider, Carr takes on top seed Osgar O hOisin (19) from Donnybrook, who put Greystones' Odhran O'Sullivan-Hamill to the sword on an emphatic 6-2, 6-1 margin.

The women's singles final will be contested by holder Karola-Patricia Bejenaru, a Belfast-based Romanian, and current Fed Cup player Julie Byrne from Monkstown.

Top seed Bejenaru (18), who already has acquired an adult singles world ranking of 965, saw off Fitzwilliam's Anna Bowtell 7-6, 6-2, while Byrne (19) had to work hard for her win over Ruth Copas, edging the Dundalk player 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
