Tennis: Li stuns Sharapova to reach final
China's Li Na yesterday proved that her Australian Open runner-up spot in January was no fluke as she secured victory over Maria Sharapova to reach the French Open final.
Li, bidding to become the first Asian-born player to win a Grand Slam singles title, thoroughly deserved to beat the Russian No 7 seed 6-4 7-5 after dealing better with the gusty conditions.
The Russian had just one ploy, but hitting the ball as hard as she could each point made no difference whatsoever against the dogged sixth seed.
Li (29) will face Italy's Francesca Schiavone in the final after the defending champion ended French hopes by defeating Marion Bartoli 6-3 6-3 in the second semi-final.
