Super Bowl-winning NFL player Will Smith shot dead after traffic accident

Former New Orleans Saints defensive player Will Smith, who won a Super Bowl with the franchise in 2010, was shot dead after a traffic accident in the city last night.

According to ESPN, Smith (34) was shot after getting into a verbal altercation with another driver after the NFL star's car was rear-ended.

Smith was shot multiple times while his wife Racquel, 34, was shot twice in the right leg. He was pronounced dead at the scene while she was take to hospital for treatement.

The 30-year-old man who was driving the car that hit Smith's, is now in police custody.

Smith was a key member of New Orleans' Super Bowl-winning team during the 2009-10 season, where they upset the Indianapolis Colts to win the Lombardi Trophy.

Smith had three children with his wife.
