Sponsorship bonanza for Irish heroine

Katie Taylor will be sponsored by Digicel chief Denis O'Brien for the next three years, the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) has confirmed, writes ABERNARD O'NEILL.

Barry O'Brien, CEO with Digicel in Barbados, declined to reveal the exact figure involved, but described the deal as "substantial." He added that Denis O'Brien (no relation) would have offered to sponsor Taylor even if she had lost her lightweight final with China's Cheng Dong in Barbados on Saturday night.

IABA Director of boxing Dominic O'Rourke, who helped broker the sponsorship deal, said they were delighted with what was on offer. "I would like to thank Digicel CEO Barry O'Brien and the company for their hospitality during the World Championships.

"They went out of their way to make us feel at home and they came along to support the Irish team and we can't thank them highly enough."

The Irish team of Taylor, Ceire Smith, Allana Murphy and Sinead Kavanagh are due to arrive home via Dublin airport at 4.0 today.
