Spectacular Allen hits heights in five-star Lyon performance

Ireland's latest showjumping sensation, 18-year-old Bertram Allen, enjoyed a superb run of form at the 5-Star international fixture in Lyon, France over the weekend.

He kicked off on Friday with a win in the Prix Ville de Lyon, riding the brilliant nine-year-old grey mare, Ballywalter Farms' Molly Malone, pinning top German team members Hans-Dieter Dreher (Colore), and Daniel Deusser (Mouse) into second and third from a field of 54 world-class starters.

On Saturday, Allen and the mare returned to finish third in the Prix Sommer, breaking the beam fractionally slower than Olympic champion Steve Guerdat from Switzerland.

He also steered Ajaccio into a runner-up spot in the Prix Landrover, won by Belgium's Ignace Phillips.

Yesterday the Wexford native, who is based at Jessica Kuerten's former yard in Münster, Germany, steered Ajaccio into sixth in the Prix Hermes, in which Frenchman Jerome Hurel headed the line-up with Bonjovi.

Denis Lynch was also in action at the French fixture, finishing fifth on Friday with All Star.

At home, Capt Geoff Curran won the penultimate leg of the GAIN/Alltech Grand Prix League, staged at Wexford Equestrian Centre, with Mullaghbane.
