Sosnowski powers to Longford hat-trick

Last weekend was particularly busy, with events taking place in Tinryland, Longford, Mayo, Sligo and Dublin.

Polish national and Eagle AC runner Wieslaw Sosnowski won the feature event in the Pat the Baker Longford Marathon promotion, landing the main event for the third time in 2:34.41.

Robert Latola was second in 2:38.41 and Peter Mooney took third in 2:40.52.

Former Olympian Pauline Curley of Tullamore Harriers made a remarkable recovery from knee surgery to win the women's race in 2:47.39, from Donegal's Helena Crossan (2:55.14) and Yolanda Smith (3:14.21).

Ravis Zakis of West Waterford AC was a clear winner of the half-marathon in 1:10.55 ahead of Mike Yelverton (1:15.05) and Richard Gorman (1:15.12).

Linda Byrne of DSD made a winning comeback after illness to take the women's event in 1:13.48 ahead of England's Jenny Jagger (1:22.25) and Liz Hussey (1:23.31).

This was an impressive performance by Byrne, who has her sights set on the National Lottery Dublin Marathon in October.

The Pat the Baker Longford Running Festival was again a great success, with close to 1,000 taking part in a range of events.

Race director Liam Fenelon finished this 10th anniversary Longford Marathon in 5 hours 48 minutes -- a proud achievement for the 69-year-old who has completed 228 marathons.
