Snooker: Doherty triumphs
Former world champion Ken Doherty set up an all-Ireland meeting with Joe Swail for a place at the Crucible this year after a 10-3 victory over six-time runner-up Jimmy White in yesterday's qualifying round.
The Ranelagh cueman has slipped to No 44 in the rankings and, last year, failed to reach the World Championships for the first time since 1993. However, he is now within one match of a return to the Sheffield arena.
Doherty started strongly to build a 5-1 lead, helped by breaks of 88, 67, 55 and 64, before White fought back to trail 6-3 at the interval. The Dubliner, though, roared into action in the evening session and reeled off four consecutive frames to set up a meeting with Swail.
There was some consolation for White, who managed to seal his place in the top 64, meaning he will be able to start next season as a tour professional for a 31st year.
