sizzling McCarthy storms to third title in a row
handball: Westmeath's Robbie McCarthy sealed a third successive M Donnelly All-Ireland 60x30 Senior Singles title when he saw off a game Eoin Kennedy in the final in Williamstown, Co Galway on Saturday – and then paid tribute to his opponent as his "inspiration".
Kennedy (34) won eight titles in all between 2002 and 2010, but has now lost the last three finals to Westmeath sensation McCarthy.
The 26-year-old Mullingar right-hander took a 10-1 lead in game one but the veteran came roaring back and levelled at 20-all before McCarthy closed out the game with a precise pass shot down the left.
The second game was tight for long periods before McCarthy's younger legs helped him pull away to seal a 21-20 21-10 victory after a fantastic match.
"Eoin was a great champion and came back this year with a bang. He inspired me growing up and I hope he keeps going because there is plenty more in him," said McCarthy.
St Brigid's clubman Kennedy, who was playing in his 12th successive final, refused to be drawn on his future plans.
