Six of the best have Ruth in top form
Dolores Ruth yesterday reported that her six-strong team are in superb form following their first-round efforts in the Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby.
Indeed, her runners are pretty dominant in the betting, with Razldazl George a best-priced 10/1 with all firms, while his litter brother Razldazl Jayfkay is next best at 14/1.
"I have just galloped them and they are all bouncing," said Ruth. "I am very happy with them and now looking forward to the second round."
The 16 heats will be divided equally between Thursday and Saturday, and two excellent nights of racing are in prospect .
Meanwhile, Newbridge supremo David Morgan reports that former Harold's Cross and Waterford manager Eamonn Mackey will be returning to the fold when the Kildare track reopens on September 9.
Mackey is a significant "signing" for the team. It is hoped that he will move in next week and that qualifying trials can recommence on the week beginning August 22.
"When Eamonn settles in we will start discussing the programme and the possible dates for such traditional events as the Cox Cup and the Texacloth Puppy Derby. We are in the process of talking to existing and potential sponsors," said Morgan.
"Both Peter (Franklin) and I are confident there is a market in Newbridge to sustain a very successful track. It has a great location and we will be aiming to provide value for money and to promote and market it properly. We intend to expand the entertainment package."
The Derby apart, the weekend highlight will be the final of the Bar One Racing Irish Sprint Cup at Dundalk on Sunday.
The Graham Holland-trained Cracking Man is red-hot favourite and has been installed at 4/5 by sponsor Barney O'Hare.
Unbeaten in the stake and with a career record of 10 wins from 12 outings, the son of Skywalker Ace is drawn on the right side of main rival Yes Boss and has the gears to outpace Drumcove Lad, Shoemakers Lad, Gilford Driver and Hi There Rocky to the bend. Indeed, he looks value at 4/5.
