Six Irish close in on medals

IRELAND will have six boxers trading leather for at least bronze medals at the European Junior Championships in Sofia today.

Brian Wall, Lewis Crocker and Wayne Kelly all won yesterday to join Darren Pollock, Kalum McConville and Jason McKay in the quarter-finals.

Kelly and Crocker recorded convincing wins over German lightweight Johanathan Zumbe and Turkish light-welter Ogulcan Albayrak respectively and Wall followed that up with a 7-5 decision over Romanian middleweight Leonard Nicolae .

Cluskey suffers humbling loss

James Cluskey will have to rely on the doubles event to make a major impact on the Spanish ITF circuit this week.

After coming through the singles qualifying round, the 25-year-old Dubliner yesterday crashed out in the first round of the outdoor hardcourt tournament near Seville, 6-1 6-0 to Spain's Jaime Pulgar-Garcia.

Cluskey and France's Fabrice Martin are the top seeds in the doubles, opening today.

Also in action today in the Spanish event is James McGee, who takes on France's Antoine Benneteau in the opening round of the singles.
